EINFÜHRUNG IN VISUELLES DENKEN: In Memoriam

Only since recently I have gotten into Edward Steichen's work.

317 Edward Steichen, In Memoriam

I chose this particular photograph by coincidence. I walked into that arts shop with the most massive postcard selection in Waldstraße, next to Aldi to find a card to send to a friend. After having spend half an hour going through Van Goghs, Chagalls and Rubens I ended up in the photography section. There were mainly bad boring "vintage" images but then I came across In Memoriam. I instantly fell in love with the picturesque enchantment of the diffuse portraiture.

To me, its somewhat fanciful archaism is in all its yesteryearness abnormally relevant as I see in it the counterpart to all those Bechers and Gurskys.

Nine Eyes of Google: Street View’s Strangest Images

Article from the website

9 Eyes project

As Google’s Street View vans cruise around the world, they don’t just capture static images of roads, buildings and fields. They take candid snapshots of humanity – images that can be funny, disturbing, strange and haunting. They have frozen moments of grief and despair, of car accidents and burning houses, but also couples embracing and children laughing. A project called The Nine Eyes of Google Street View by Jon Rafman brings these images together into a poignant collection.
